The final step of the year is covering our berries with a layer of straw mulch. This process is usually done in mid-December when the ground is frozen and the berries have gone completely dormant. The straw provides dual purposes. The first is to protect our berries from “winter kill” or extreme cold temperatures in the winter. The next is for providing a nice straw mulch in the aisle ways for folks to walk on during harvest–no dirty or muddy feet!
